JESUS AND POLITICS

Hey Family,

Last night we talked about Jesus and Politics. In light of the upcoming elections we thought it was necessary to address your concerns and questions. You submitted killer questions and we dealt with a good majority of them as best we could, using the Scriptures as our authority. Thanks for all your positive feedback and engaging conversation after Epic.

Well as we talked about last night, we don’t want this to be a one-sided conversation. We want you to continue the dialogue with the Epic family. If you have questions, comments, disagreements, conclusions, opinions, or thoughts about last night, feel free to contribute something. Use this blog or email us at epicsandiego@gmail.com. We hope to read some of your comments as a follow-up next Thursday. Thanks in advance for your contributions. To refresh your memory here are some of the questions addressed last night.

~ Would Jesus vote for a president? Would He vote at all? Would He want His followers to vote?
~ How will this election change the character of our nation?
~ Why should we force morality through laws example prop 8?
~Would Jesus be a Republican or a Democrat?
~ What does the Bible say about the role the government should have (their purpose)- their sphere of influence/power?
~ How involved should Christians be in politics?

Looking forward to our conversation,

Love you all,
Manny

well only a small portion of issues.but in order for us to deal with the issues we know that are wrong.we mus first be the children of God and let the Lord convict those of their wrong so that people can be changed into his people

I thought it was interesting that you brought up an article that linked the Democratic party to being more in line with Jesus’ point of view than the Republican party. I am a registered Democrat and having become a Christian since the last election my faith hadn't been an issue when it came election time until now.

I am torn because traditionally I would try to vote with my party but there are some things about Obama that I think are really sketchy (like his past and some of the things he’s had censored about himself… which I don’t think anyone running for office should have the right to do) and I think he's kind of scary in a mesmerizing kind of way. I don’t love McCain either but at least he doesn’t scare me and I don’t think he is proposing anything outrageous for this country.

Going back to the Democratic Party thing aligning with Jesus more… to some extent I think that is true. On obvious issues like the stance on abortion and marriage rights they don’t align; but in the general idea of serving the “lower” class citizens of this country before corporate America I think Jesus would agree with that. He always helped the hungry and the ill before anyone well off.

I’ve thought that the deciding factor on whether you vote republican or democrat at some point comes down to money especially once you really start making it. I think that if you have money you’ll want to protect it and it seems like that is generally what the Republicans try to do. They want to lower taxes on the wealthy and cut government spending. If you don’t have money you’ll want to get help and it seems like that is generally what the Democrats try to do. They want to raise taxes on the wealthy and use government money to promote programs to assist the poor. I don’t think Jesus would promote casting your vote based on how much money you have. That’s really greedy and the bible says that material things of this world aren’t worth anything. So I will try to cast my vote on other deciding factors than who will save me the most money come tax time.

I think its more then just money. Its about does the person who is running believes to preserve, protect and defend out constitution and our way of life. How long have we forgotten the foundation of America.the good old days of both parties understanding the important of prayer and bible lesson in schools and declaring the name of God has now been thrown out in exchange for whatever man can invent.we need God in America

When voting as a Christian one must always remember to consider those running for office in light of who God is. God will have wraith paid to those who are unrighteous and we as Christians are called to holiness. We are set apart and are soldiers for our Lord only, and we should never endorse anything that goes directly against God and His revealed word. Most issues have great gray area and they depend more upon the persons heart than the action itself, but there are clear cut issues that we know our Lord stands against. Those things alone should be our consideration when making our choices and our commitment should be to continue praying and follow God where he leads.

When we obey our Lord as a nation we are blessed by Him as He has promised. We are called to not fear or worry about tomorrow. If we are really worried about the economy then following God as a nation is the only sure thing to fix it and make it solid again. The deficit spending and credit practices common in America are unbiblical in our financial responsibilities and America has reaped what it has sown.

Right now, most any leader in DC is going to lead this nation astray. Not because they don't have support or resources or good plans of action, but because they are ungodly and incapable of even seeing a clear and right way out of the problems. God may allow them to prosper for a time but in His season judgement will come from on high.

Hey Marghee. You said something very interesting about helping the lower class. I have a question because I have really been trying to determine my convictions about that. I think every Christian agrees on the fact that Jesus' heart is for the poor. I honestly don't know, however, if that is a responsibility for the government to fulfill. I have talked to people and heard that same argument from others so they vote that way but their personal life does not reflect that same heart for the poor. i am starting to think that Jesus' intention for caring for the poor is up to the church and ones family based on the Scriptures that deal with that. Im still looking into it but what do you think? Just an honest question...hee hee
